About Ringette
Ringette is a Canadian game that was first introduced in 1963 in North
Bay, Ontario. Developed originally for girls, ringette is a fast-paced
team sport on ice in which players use a straight stick to pass, carry,
and shoot a rubber ring to score goals.
For ten years, play centered in Ontario and Quebec, however the sport
quickly spread across Canada and is now played in all ten provinces
and the Northwest Territories. In fact, the sport has become one of
Canada's favorite activities for females, with over 50,000 participants
across Canada - a remarkable growth rate for such a young sport.

This
article is to appear in the Manitoba Ringette Association `Round-Up`
publication in February of 2004.
Put it in the record books!! For the first time ever, Glenwood is
hosting a Novice Ringette team! With such a nice facility and most
importantly, indoor ice, a ringette program out of this area of St.Vital
was long
overdue. After much hard work and dedication, the program is on its
feet with Novice and Intermediate teams and hoping to grow every year.
The Glenwood Bruins Novice team which is made up of 12 girls from
Norberry, Glenwood, Glenlee and Norwood found a comfortable spot in
the Jaguar loop fighting for second spot in the Winnipeg Ringette
League standings. Quite impressive for its first year! Who'd have
thought that five brand new ringette players, combined with seven
girls with previous experience could be so successful and more importantly
have so much fun! To the team, Tim Stampe, a first time ringette coach,
brings his experience in working with kids and in coaching soccer.
Lindsey Branconnier, a very experienced ringette player, former AA
goaltender for the BoniVital Angels, brings her many years of experience
in the sport to the team. (Plus, shes developing a goaltender!)
Together this dynamic coaching duo along with hard working managers
makes for a very happy bunch of kids. And for practices, we are fortunate
to draw on the words of the wise from Mike Forsythe whose involvement
in the sport dates back many years.
Dont close those record books yet! For the first time ever,
Glenwood is hosting a ringette tournament which takes place during
the Community Club's annual Winter Carnival from February 5th to 15th,
2004. To kick off the tournament we are hosting a Pancake Breakfast
on Sunday February 8th. All are welcome to attend - rumor has it that
there may be a World Champion Ringette player there too!!
All in all, we could not ask for a better rookie year for Glenwood's
Ringette Program. The futures so bright - we gotta wear shades!
