Glenwood
was started in the same way as many other community clubs or corner
lot rinks. An old box car with a barrel stove and a small bit of someone's
garden to flood and make a skating rink...
About
1946 the boxcar was torn down, a furnace room or change room was erected.
A rink was erected and was used as a pleasure and hockey rink.
A few
years later the basement and upper structure was added to as membership
was starting to grow and the space was needed. This took care of the
winter activities and the summer sports (baseball) was taken care of
with a ball diamond.
But our
club activities were building and space was needed to take care of these.
Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Guides, Sub Teens, Junior Teens, and Senior
Teen dances were being started. Bingo took care of one afternoon and
evening per week. This provided us with the much-needed funds to keep
the club operating and plan for the future. An evening of Whist for
the older folks with Baton and Tap-dancing for the younger ones was
also started. Sunday afternoon movies for the children were started
and proved very popular for a number of years until we found we could
not compete with television.
To take
care of our ever-growing activities we were forced to add to the building.
Another 50 feet of basement was dug adjoining the original clubhouse
and the clubhouse was added accordingly.
This was
complete with canteen, washrooms, dressing rooms were build in the basement
area and a bit of storage space was available.
A regulation
rink was put up during the next fall complete with player, penalty and
timekeeper's boxes. It was also necessary at this time to enlarge our
summer baseball diamonds. During the years we have added and improved
until we now have 4 ball diamonds, 1 with backstop and bleachers and
the other 3 with backstops only.
